Owner Karl Raffurty was born and raised in Cincinnati Ohio. As a sophomore in high school his first job was a bar back at Flannigan’s Landing — the biggest and baddest bar in Cincinnati. Then and there is where he fell in love with the hospitality industry and imagined owning his own sports bar and restaurant one day. He went to collage at Urbanna University where he majored in psychology.
After college he started working more and more in the hospitality industry, mostly hotels. In 1994, Karl moved down to sunny Florida and started working at the Marriott in Panama City Beach. In 1997, he planted his feet in Sarasota where he became supervisor at the Hyatt Hotel.
From there, Karl came across the Longboat Key Club and Resort where he was head bartender for 17 years. In the fall of 2013, all of Karl’s planning and hard work became a reality as he become owner of Old School Bar & Grill in downtown Sarasota, Fla. He wanted a place where friends could get together watch sports, have beers, great food and enjoy all kinds of live music. A fun place with a laid back, neighborhood kind of vibe and that is exactly what he has successfully done. Karl says his future plans are to continue working together with his downtown Sarasota community, promoting local events and charity fundraisers and eventually he plans on franchising out.
