The main problem with insidious is that the first act was really good but it failed to pick up steam so it steadily fell apart as the movie progressed.
This becomes vary obvious in don't be afraid of the dark.
Insidious only had one strong first act whereas don't be afraid of the dark suffers from it being good and bad in pieces across the movie.
